Eight valleys in five stages: the Albtaeler Cycle Route in the UNESCO Swabian Alb Geopark leads high up to panoramic views and deep down into valleys with rivers, caves, prehistoric reefs and historical sites of Swabian culture. The long-distance cycle route is 186 kilometres long and begins and ends in Amstetten. Let's go to rock needles, thermal springs and the oldest cabaret in human history!
There is hardly any other route where exciting descents and adventurous geological history lie so close to timeless idyll and relaxing deceleration. Rugged, filigree rock formations, turquoise-blue spring pools, prehistoric sea reefs in the form of rocks, valleys with river meadows and caves characterise the landscape of the UNESCO Geopark. From the rocks of the ‘Stone Virgins’ to the origins of Lone and Fils to the site where the sensational 40,000-year-old lion-man figure was found – the Albtaeler Cycle Route leads to wonderful photo opportunities, great amazement and exciting knowledge. Whether it's a tour through Germany's deepest shaft cave, a daring view from the edge of the Alb or a Tarzan swing from the treetops of a climbing forest: it's not just the ups and downs on the bike that get the adrenaline pumping.
But the Albtaeler Cycle Route also has a gentler side. Nostalgic steam trains such as the Alb-Bähnle, historic mills, a visit to the Steiff animal exhibition and lovingly restored local history museums take you back to days gone by, to traditional crafts and regional customs and stories. Thermal springs and spas along the route offer cyclists rest and relaxation at the end of the day. There is also no shortage of peace and enjoyment. From juniper heaths with sheep and orchards with colourful butterflies to herb gardens with sustainable products for body and soul, everyone will find their own personal Alb moment along the route.
