Bocksteinhöhle
Bockstein,
Öllinger Straße, 89542 Bissingen ob Lontal
The Bocksteinhöhle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Caves and Ice Age Art in the Swabian Jura" and freely accessible. Finds from it can be dated back to 50,000 to 70,000 years ago. The Bocksteinhöhle is thus considered to be the oldest settlement complex of the Neanderthal in southern Germany.
The Bocksteinhöhle is located in the Lonetal about 12 meters above the valley. From the caves as well as from the shelter a bit higher up you have a beautiful view into the valley and you can well imagine the herds of animals of prehistoric times, which were the source of food for the inhabitants at that time. Good footwear for the ascent is advantageous, especially in humid conditions.
