Katzenstein Castle with Geopark information center
The Katzenstein castle towers impressively above the high rocks. Extensive restoration work has been carried out on the castle since 1967, restoring one of southern Germany's most valuable castle complexes from the Romanesque period to its former glory.
The castle is firmly rooted in the landscape. The curtain wall, great hall, and keep rise majestically from a rock. The keep, known as the “Cat Tower,” seems to have grown out of the rock with its massive humpback blocks.
The original entrance is seven meters above the ground. This tower contains an open stone fireplace from the Romanesque period, with a cat and lily carved into its mantel as heraldic symbols.
The castle is also a prime example of a defensive structure with several inner courtyards, battlements, and bastions. The 12th-century great hall was rebuilt during the restoration of the castle. Its lowest floor is spanned by two mighty barrel vaults and contains the castle well, carved 23 meters deep into the rock.
