The source of the Brenz River in Königsbronn
In Königsbronn, the Brenz River emerges into the light after a long journey through the karst mountains. The Brenztopf is one of the most beautiful and significant karst springs in the Swabian Alb.
The spring has an average flow rate of 1200 l/sec, with peaks of up to 13,200 l/sec. The amount varies depending on the amount of precipitation. Due to the fast flow velocity of the water in the rock crevices (approx. 0.1 km/h), the karst spring reacts within a few hours to rainfall and snowmelt in the region.
Industrial history was written at the source of the Brenz. As early as the 16th century, the hammer mill was a milestone in iron processing in the upper Brenz Valley, and this is also where Germany's oldest iron industry originated. You can learn about this history on a tour of the historic part of Königsbronn around the source of the Brenz. If you prefer hiking, we recommend the 5-kilometer Brenzquellrunde trail to Lake Itzelberg, one of the day-long circular hiking trails on the Albschäferweg.
